DDA Support Broker Practice Exam

The belief that individuals with developmental disabilities are unable to make decisions for themselves is a common misconception. In reality, many individuals with such disabilities are capable of making informed choices and decisions related to their lives, given the appropriate support and resources.

This misconception tends to stem from a misunderstanding of the abilities of these individuals and can lead to undue paternalism, where others assume these individuals must be guided in every aspect of their lives. However, decision-making abilities vary widely among individuals with developmental disabilities, similar to how they do in the general population. In many cases, with proper support, they can express preferences and make choices that align with their goals and desires, leading to more independent and fulfilling lives.

Encouraging autonomy is crucial in helping individuals with developmental disabilities to thrive, as it fosters self-advocacy and personal empowerment.
